If it ain”t broke, don”t fix it. But maybe add Macros.

The original Logitech MX Keys (2019) is a legend. Walk into any startup or design agency, and you”ll see rows of them. So when Logitech announced the “S” refresh, “the question wasn”t “Is it good?”, but “Is it effectively different?”.

After 3 months of daily use, the answer is: Yes, if you care about automation.

What Changed? (S vs Original)

Visually, they are identical. The magic is inside.

The Secret Weapon: Smart Actions

This is the reason to upgrade. “Smart Actions” in Logi Options+ allows you to chain commands like a stream deck.

My “Deep Work” Macro:

  1. Open VS Code.
  2. Open Spotify (LoFi Playlist).
  3. Set Slack status to “Focusing”.
  4. Minimize Chrome.

All of this happens with one key press (I assigned it to F1).

ℹ️
For Developers

You can map a Smart Action to type a git command. git add . && git commit -m "wip" && git push on a single key? Dangerous, but possible.

Connectivity: Bolt is Rock Solid

The old Unifying receiver struggled in crowded offices (interference with USB 3.0 ports). Logi Bolt is based on Bluetooth Low Energy Security Mode 1, Level 4. In English: It doesn’t disconnect, even in a room with 50 other wireless devices.

Logitech MX KEYS S

Typing Experience

It”s still the best scissor-switch membrane keyboard on the market. The “Perfect Stroke” dish keys cup your fingertips, making it hard to miss a key. It is quiet, tactile, and extremely stable.

Conclusion

If you have a working original MX Keys, you don’t need to upgrade unless you work in a high-interference environment (need Bolt) or are a macro power-user (need Smart Actions).

But if you are buying a new keyboard today? The MX Keys S is the undisputed king of the office.
