Key Points
Key Takeaways
- 1
The End of Gear
- 2
Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS): We are always looking for 'Next amazing gadget'. But that is trap of dopamine. Even if buying new keyboard, novel cannot be written well
- 3
Frictionless: Real good tool becomes transparent. Does not rise to consciousness. Just zero friction between thinking and output
- 4
Buy It For Life (BIFL): Choose only one usable until death. Continue using while repairing. Attachment to that tool improves quality of your work
- 5
Enough is Enough: Know satisfaction. Perfect setup is state where there is nothing to add more and nothing to subtract. And not getting tired of that state
Introduction: End of Journey
I have written 144 articles. Latest AI, strongest PC, ultimate desk. I have pursued every “Best”.
But I noticed something. Most productive day might have been that day when I was writing code on park bench with only tattered MacBook and coffee.
Tools are for using. Not for collecting.
1. The Invisible Tool
It is said that best technology is indistinguishable from magic. Similarly, best tool does not make feel existence.
- HHKB : Becomes part of finger, forget hitting keys.
- OLED : Frame of screen disappears, only image floats.
- Noise Canceling : Sound of world disappears, only silence remains.
Tool that impresses “Amazing!” is second rate. Tool that makes think “Oh, finished already?” is first rate.
2. The Relationship
Please review relationship with tool. Is it “Consumption”? Or “Dialogue”?
Buying new one every time new iPhone comes out is consumption. Using one fountain pen for 10 years whilst changing ink and adjusting nib is dialogue. Tool with dialogue does not betray you. It fits shape of hand, remembers habit of thinking, and moves with breathing of A-Un.
3. The Philosophy of Enough
“If there was faster CPU…” “If there was wider monitor…”
That thirst (Hunger) was gasoline to make you grow. But need to apply brake somewhere. Otherwise, you are slave of spec sheet for rest of life.
“This is enough”
Please have courage to say so. At that moment, journey of gadget selection ends, and journey of true Creation begins.
4. The Setup
My final setup (Endgame) became surprisingly simple.
- 1 board (Desk)
- 1 chair
- 1 PC
- 1 notebook
This is all. Nothing else is needed. When unnecessary things disappear from sight, only “You” and “Work” remain.
Conclusion: You Yourself are Strongest Gear
No matter how expensive camera, it cannot beat your “Viewpoint”. No matter how fast PC, it cannot beat your “Passion”.
Please stop relying on tools. Master tools like limbs, and enhance ability of yourself to limit.
